Defending Criminal Cases in the Eastern District of Virginia

The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA) covers the DC suburbs (beginning in Northern Virginia) down to the Tidewater area. The Court has divisions in Alexandria, Richmond, Newport News, and Norfolk. It is one of the most unique and challenging jurisdictions in the country to practice law, especially federal criminal defense.

Many people refer to the Eastern District of Virginia by its nickname: “the Rocket Docket,” which refers to the speed with which the court handles civil and criminal cases.

Criminal cases in this district are prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. The criminal section of this office is divided into National Security, Major Crimes, and Financial Crimes divisions. Many federal criminal cases in the district come from the FBI Washington Field Office, located in Manassas, Virginia.

Because of its proximity to Washington, DC, the US Department of Justice prosecutes many of its most high profile cases in the Eastern District of Virginia. These include espionage cases such as the prosecution of former FBI agent Robert Hansen, terrorism cases such as the prosecution of Zacarias Moussaoui, and public corruption cases such as the prosecution of former U.S. Congressman William Jefferson.
